hydrotherapy dublinHydrotherapy is a specialised form of Physiotherapy treatment which takes place in a warm swimming pool.  Water is an excellent medium for exercise, the warmth of the water increases the flow of blood  to the muscles which eases stiffness, reduces pain and encourages movement.  The buoyancy of the water reduces your body weight; which gives joints support and protection while you exercise.  Conversely the resistance of the water pushes against your body as you perform exercises and can be used to make movement gradually more strenuous. Hydrotherapy is an excellent adjunct to conventional land based Physiotherapy.

Prior to commencing Hydrotherapy, each patient undergoes a specific  land based assessment in the practice in Clontarf. Our  hydrotherapy treatment programme consists of a 10 - 12 week course in which core stability, strengthening and stretching exercises are taught by our Chartered Physiotherapists in a heated swimming pool.   Each session lasts from 40 minutes to 1 hour in our pool in Sportslink Santry or St Michaels House. Each class has a small number of patients to ensure individual attention. At the end of a Hydrotherapy course you will have confidence in continuing and managing a programme of water based exercises independently. Due to the popularity of the programme at times there may be a waiting list for Hydrotherapy, so please call us to take your details.  Access to the pool is very gradual and simple, there are no steps or ladders.  Hydrotherapy is suitable for both swimmers and non-swimmers. There is no requirement for your head to go underwater.

Advanced Hydrotherapy courses or ‘one to one’ sessions are available on request.
